“Political newcomer Mark Greenberg, a Litchfield real estate developer, said the district does not need ‘career politicians or wanna-be career politicians’ to be a strong voice in Congress. He said he would bring the perspective of 35 years in business—’35 years creating jobs’—to bear as well as be ‘your citizen’s voice … an independent voice in Washington with a conservative aspect’ to ‘bring back freedom and liberty.’ Pointing out the children in his family as an example, he stressed the need to effect change—’to stop this runaway train’—for the sake of their generation, which is ‘defenseless,’ unable to ‘talk’ or ‘respond’ to the ‘entitlements’ placed upon citizenry daily.” Read the full article here: http://tinyurl.com/24yuv6w

“Mr. Greenberg, who has never run for office before, said he decided to take the plunge earlier this year because, in part, he saw the impact on small businesses in a congressional district in which he has many commercial holdings.

‘Small businesses are not hiring,’ he said during an interview at Bagel Chalet on Route 44 in Simsbury. ‘They’re the engine of growth.’

Mark Greenberg, Republican candidate for Congress in the 5th Congressional District, announced today that his campaign committee reported $230,000 cash on hand in the most recent financial filing.

Greenberg, a successful businessman who has created hundreds of jobs over the past 35 years, has led all other Republican candidates in the District in cash on hand at each reporting milestone since announcing his candidacy last November.

In the latest filing, Greenberg outdistanced both Sam Caligiuri and Justin Bernier who reported $190,000 and $197,000 respectively.
“I said from the beginning that I would have the right message and the right resources, and I continue to be in the best position of all the Republican candidates as we approach the August 10th primary,” Greenberg said. “Our tremendous volunteer base, our aggressive messaging and media presence, our endorsements from Independence Caucus and Change the Congress in 2010, and our financial resources are building the momentum we need to prevail in the primary and defeat Chris Murphy in November. Neither of my Republican opponents will have the resources to go toe to toe with Murphy and his incumbent PAC and labor resources.”

“I am meeting with voters 12 to 14 hours a day, visiting businesses during the day and signing them up for “Main Street For Mark” and by walking the neighborhoods, door-to-door at night in towns all across the district,” Greenberg said. “My personal appeal to the businesses and citizens of the 5th District has given me a great opportunity to hear each and every day the real-world concerns of these folks.”

“People are tremendously passionate about this election,” Greenberg said. “They are fed up with Washington, and they’ve had it with career politicians like Chris Murphy who care more about getting re-elected than they do about putting people back to work. The bottom line is they are angry and have a right to be. They want change, and I promise I will bring real change that gives optimism and hope for the future.”
“I have led all Republican candidates in “cash on hand” in every reporting quarter since I announced my candidacy in November, and I will continue to work harder and have more resources than my competitors between now, the primary, and the general election.”

“According to the Washington Times, last week the United States’ national debt increased by an unimaginable $166 billion in just one day. An increase of $166 billion in one day is mindboggling – and to put it into perspective, Connecticut’s gross state product is only $216 billion annually.

“These unfathomable numbers demonstrate how desperately we need to put an end to out-of-control government spending in Washington. The excessive federal spending causing this massive debt is bankrupting our children and robbing them of the future they deserve. In the face of this mounting crisis, Chris Murphy proposed cutting federal spending by 1 percent, a solution that is laughable at best.

“Cutting 1 percent of federal spending is like trying to empty a lake with a 5 gallon bucket – and it shows that career politicians like Chris Murphy have no real idea of the drastic changes that are needed in Washington.

“As a member of Congress, I will bring real change to Washington in order to stop the run-away train that has become the federal budget.”

William Heering wrote the following Letter to the Editor that appeared in the June 27th edition of the Republican-American

It isn’t often in this economic/political climate that there is something encouraging to comment on. But Mark Greenberg’s announcement in Waterbury June 22 that he will run in the Aug. 10 Republican primary for the 5th House District seat was an exception.

On the face of it, this may not seem like a big deal, but it’s huge. You see, Mark Greenberg wasn’t out on the ballot by the Republican Party machine. He was placed there by We The People. For the first time in 5th district history, a citizen became a candidate through the petition process. Volunteers collected signatures from registered Republicans who want real choices, real representation and real change.

Mr. Greenberg is a businessman and entrepreneur, so he knows how to create jobs and the obligation of fiscal responsibility. He’s also a humanitarian, starting The Simon Foundation with his wife to help abandoned dogs find loving homes. Finally, Mark is a husband and father who wants a bright future in a free American for his children.

Mark loves his country. He believes the Constitution is the law of the land and that we need to return governmental power back to the people. Like most of us, he sees the direction our country is headed and has been compelled to act.

Now it’s our turn. Please check out Mark Greenberg. You’ll like what you see. Mark Greenberg gets it.

“Sam Caligiuri’s position on the real estate conveyance tax is a prime example of what career-politicians do and why we do not want any more of them in Washington, D.C. Two years ago, Sam opposed the extension of this unfair tax which penalizes homeowners who are unfortunately in the most difficult economic and home selling position in decades.

With home sales and prices already at low levels, a tax on the transaction of home sales only adds insult to injury. Yet just one week ago, during the special session of the Connecticut General Assembly, that’s precisely what Sam Caligiuri did when he voted in favor of extending the real estate conveyance tax — the same tax he opposed two years ago.

People across Connecticut — who have scrimped and saved for a down payment on a house, and worked hard each month to pay their mortgage — are told when they sell their home that the State of Connecticut will collect a tax on the transaction. This tax – levied on the American Dream of home ownership — is the tax Sam voted to extend.

As is the case with many other issues, politics as usual have gotten in the way of doing the right thing. As a member of Congress, I will not only pledge to cut taxes, I will vote to cut taxes — and I will not have to come back two years later to explain why I broke my promise.

Saying one thing one year and voting the other way a couple of years later — the voters of the 5th District have had enough of that kind of political double-speak.”

Mark Greenberg, Republican candidate for Congress in the 5th Congressional District, announced today that he has collected the required number of petition signatures to qualify for the August 10th Republican District primary and will be a candidate on the ballot.

Greenberg, a successful businessman who has created hundreds of jobs over the past 35 years, pledged to bring his conservative, outsider message to the voters of the District — and common sense business practices to the Washington establishment.

“I have said from the day I announced my candidacy that I would take my message directly to the people of the 5th District,” Greenberg said. “Voters are demanding change — and I will bring real change to our broken government in Washington. I have a business perspective that is sorely lacking in our career politicians, and I will wage a vigorous primary campaign to win the nomination and the right to face Chris Murphy in November.”

“Career politicians like Chris Murphy have given us a government we cannot afford, a huge bureaucracy we don’t want, and an economy that is stuck in reverse,” Greenberg said. “People are rightly concerned – and angry – about the direction of this country. I am also concerned, and that’s why I’m running.”

“I will hold Congress to the same standards that apply to any successful business- don’t spend more than you have, and don’t create products or programs that people won’t buy,” Greenberg said. “The bottom line is that the voters of Connecticut are not buying what Washington and Chris Murphy are selling.”

“My Republican opponents in the primary are individuals who have made government their careers – one as a career elected politician and the other as a government bureaucratic staffer,” Greenberg said. “My career has been in the business world – not the political world – and I pledge that I will put the interests of the people first.”

“I look forward to an exciting primary campaign based on the issues that mean the most to the families and businesses of the 5th District,” Greenberg said. “The problems we face in our state and nation can be fixed. But we need new leadership and a new direction in Washington.”

Greenberg has led all other Republican candidates in the District in cash on hand at each reporting milestone since announcing his candidacy last November.

At a news conference at Mark Greenberg for Congress headquarters today, Republican candidate for Congress Bill Evans announced that he is ending his campaign for Congress in Connecticut’s 5th District and is supporting Mark Greenberg in the August 10th Republican primary that will decide who challenges Chris Murphy in November.

“When I entered the race for the 5th Congressional district on November 7, 2009, it was because I felt that we needed a strong conservative voice in order to undo the damage career politicians have done to our country,” Evans said. “Our campaign theme of ‘Common Sense for Connecticut’ seemed not only simple but timely and the group of volunteers who stepped up to help us was nothing short of incredible.”

“Over the past seven months I have spent time a tremendous amount of time speaking with the citizens of the 5th district at various events and the people have made it very clear that they want a real change this November,” Evans said. “They have told me they do not want another politician or party insider who will simply go to Washington and become part of the system. I have spent time with all of the candidates in this race at various forums and have found that Mark Greenberg is far and away the most in line with my values and principles.”

“Both Mark and I believe that it will take a true outsider to fix the problems we face in the district, state, and country. We both have been big believers in an open primary process where the voices of all the voters would be heard and decide our nominee,” Evans said. “This campaign has never been about me or any type of political agenda. It has been about bringing real change to Washington Dc before it is too late.”

“Accordingly, I am dropping my bid for Congress effective immediately and will begin working to elect Mark Greenberg as the next Congressman of the 5th district. I am sure my supporters will realize that by electing Mark, we will be getting all of the things that we have been fighting to achieve over these past several months. I look forward to integrating our two campaigns as seamlessly as possible and ultimately retaking this seat for the citizens of the 5th district.”

“I am proud and honored that Bill is supporting me in the Republican primary,” Greenberg said. “On many occasions at candidate forums, Bill and I have spoken with one voice on the issues facing our state and nation. We both know that the only way we can restore this country to its democratic roots is by bringing real and lasting change to Washington.”

Greenberg also announced today that he has submitted approximately 3,000 petition signatures to qualify for the August 10th Republican District primary — well in excess of the required 1,850, in time to meet the June 8th deadline.
Greenberg, a successful businessman who has created hundreds of jobs over the past 35 years, has pledged to bring his conservative, outsider message to the voters of the District — and common sense business practices to the Washington establishment.
Greenberg has also led all other Republican candidates in the District in cash on hand at each reporting milestone since announcing his candidacy last November.
